129. MODEL OF HEROD’S TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM. THE TEMPLE WAS A 50 M HIGH MARBLE BUILDING BUILT ON THE HIGHEST HILL IN JERUSALEM. THE TEMPLE SHELTERED THE ‘HOLY OF THE HOLIES’ IN WHICH THE HOLY ARK, THE GOLDEN ALTAR AND THE GOLDEN MENORAH RESTED. ONLY THE HIGH PRIEST WAS ALLOWED TO ENTER THIS ROOM, ONCE A YEAR ON YOM KIPPUR. THE TWO PILLARS FLANKING THE ENTRANCE ARE CALLED ‘YACHIN’ AND ‘BOAZ’ REMINISENT OF KING SOLOMON’S FIRST TEMPLE. THE TEMPLE WAS LOOTED AND DESTROYED BY THE ROMANS IN 72 AD.
