4958.(30) Quartz Cylinder Seal, Provenance: North Syria or Northern Mesopotamia: Mitannian period, ca. 1500-1350 B.C. A product of the workshops of one of the principal Hurrian centres when the Hurrians formed a political entity names Mitanni under their Indo-European overlords. Combined in this seal are elements from Egypt (the sphinx and the Hathor heads), from Mesopotamia (the master of animals motif and the winged disc) and Anatolia (the double headed creature). ‘Thou didst divide the sea with thy strength; thou brokest the heads of the dragons in the waters. Thou brokest the heads of Leviathan in pieces and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.’ Psalms 74:13-14.
