4950 (28). Gypsum Cylinder Seal, Mesopotamia: late Akkadian period, c.2254-2154 BC. Literacy began in Mesopotamia and spread throughout the near east inspiring various attemps at emulation. In this seal from the third millennium, the heraldic design of an antithetical pair of lions gripping the horns of water buffalo flank the inscription: ‘Du-du , the scribe’. ‘Out of Machir came down the governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.’ Judges 5:14.
